LLM-driven Effective Knowledge Tracing by Integrating Dual-channel Difficulty

Knowledge Tracing (KT) is a fundamental technology in intelligent tutoring systems used to simulate changes in students' knowledge state during learning, track personalized knowledge mastery, and predict performance. However, current KT models face three major challenges: (1) When encountering new questions, models face cold-start problems due to sparse interaction records, making precise modeling difficult; (2) Traditional models only use historical interaction records for student personalization modeling, unable to accurately track individual mastery levels, resulting in unclear personalized modeling; (3) The decision-making process is opaque to educators, making it challenging for them to understand model judgments. To address these challenges, we propose a novel Dual-channel Difficulty-aware Knowledge Tracing (DDKT) framework that utilizes Large Language Models (LLMs) and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) for subjective difficulty assessment, while integrating difficulty bias-aware algorithms and student mastery algorithms for precise difficulty measurement. Our framework introduces three key innovations: (1) Difficulty Balance Perception Sequence (DBPS) - students' subjective perceptions combined with objective difficulty, measuring gaps between LLM-assessed difficulty, mathematical-statistical difficulty, and students' subjective perceived difficulty through attention mechanisms; (2) Difficulty Mastery Ratio (DMR) - precise modeling of student mastery levels through different difficulty zones; (3) Knowledge State Update Mechanism - implementing personalized knowledge acquisition through gated networks and updating student knowledge state. Experimental results on two real datasets show our method consistently outperforms nine baseline models, improving AUC metrics by 2% to 10% while effectively addressing cold-start problems and enhancing model interpretability.


Online Adaptive Traversability Estimation through Interaction for Unstructured, Densely Vegetated Environments

Navigating densely vegetated environments poses significant challenges for autonomous ground vehicles. Learning-based systems typically use prior and in-situ data to predict terrain traversability but often degrade in performance when encountering out-of-distribution elements caused by rapid environmental changes or novel conditions. This paper presents a novel, lidar-only, online adaptive traversability estimation (TE) method that trains a model directly on the robot using self-supervised data collected through robot-environment interaction. The proposed approach utilises a probabilistic 3D voxel representation to integrate lidar measurements and robot experience, creating a salient environmental model. To ensure computational efficiency, a sparse graph-based representation is employed to update temporarily evolving voxel distributions. Extensive experiments with an unmanned ground vehicle in natural terrain demonstrate that the system adapts to complex environments with as little as 8 minutes of operational data, achieving a Matthews Correlation Coefficient (MCC) score of 0.63 and enabling safe navigation in densely vegetated environments. This work examines different training strategies for voxel-based TE methods and offers recommendations for training strategies to improve adaptability. The proposed method is validated on a robotic platform with limited computational resources (25W GPU), achieving accuracy comparable to offline-trained models while maintaining reliable performance across varied environments.


The iToBoS dataset: skin region images extracted from 3D total body photographs for lesion detection

Artificial intelligence has significantly advanced skin cancer diagnosis by enabling rapid and accurate detection of malignant lesions. In this domain, most publicly available image datasets consist of single, isolated skin lesions positioned at the center of the image. While these lesion-centric datasets have been fundamental for developing diagnostic algorithms, they lack the context of the surrounding skin, which is critical for improving lesion detection. The iToBoS dataset was created to address this challenge. It includes 16,954 images of skin regions from 100 participants, captured using 3D total body photography. Each image roughly corresponds to a $7 \times 9$ cm section of skin with all suspicious lesions annotated using bounding boxes. Additionally, the dataset provides metadata such as anatomical location, age group, and sun damage score for each image. This dataset aims to facilitate training and benchmarking of algorithms, with the goal of enabling early detection of skin cancer and deployment of this technology in non-clinical environments.


Certifying Pareto-Optimality in Multi-Objective Maximum Satisfiability

Due to the wide employment of automated reasoning in the analysis and construction of correct systems, the results reported by automated reasoning engines must be trustworthy. For Boolean satisfiability (SAT) solvers - and more recently SAT-based maximum satisfiability (MaxSAT) solvers - trustworthiness is obtained by integrating proof logging into solvers, making solvers capable of emitting machine-verifiable proofs to certify correctness of the reasoning steps performed. In this work, we enable for the first time proof logging based on the VeriPB proof format for multi-objective MaxSAT (MO-MaxSAT) optimization techniques. Although VeriPB does not offer direct support for multi-objective problems, we detail how preorders in VeriPB can be used to provide certificates for MO-MaxSAT algorithms computing a representative solution for each element in the non-dominated set of the search space under Pareto-optimality, without extending the VeriPB format or the proof checker. By implementing VeriPB proof logging into a state-of-the-art multi-objective MaxSAT solver, we show empirically that proof logging can be made scalable for MO-MaxSAT with reasonable overhead.


MAUCell: An Adaptive Multi-Attention Framework for Video Frame Prediction

Temporal sequence modeling stands as the fundamental foundation for video prediction systems and real-time forecasting operations as well as anomaly detection applications. The achievement of accurate predictions through efficient resource consumption remains an ongoing issue in contemporary temporal sequence modeling. We introduce the Multi-Attention Unit (MAUCell) which combines Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and spatio-temporal attention mechanisms to improve video frame prediction capabilities. Our approach implements three types of attention models to capture intricate motion sequences. A dynamic combination of these attention outputs allows the model to reach both advanced decision accuracy along with superior quality while remaining computationally efficient. The integration of GAN elements makes generated frames appear more true to life therefore the framework creates output sequences which mimic real-world footage. The new design system maintains equilibrium between temporal continuity and spatial accuracy to deliver reliable video prediction. Through a comprehensive evaluation methodology which merged the perceptual LPIPS measurement together with classic tests MSE, MAE, SSIM and PSNR exhibited enhancing capabilities than contemporary approaches based on direct benchmark tests of Moving MNIST, KTH Action, and CASIA-B (Preprocessed) datasets. Our examination indicates that MAUCell shows promise for operational time requirements. The research findings demonstrate how GANs work best with attention mechanisms to create better applications for predicting video sequences.


Learning states enhanced knowledge tracing: Simulating the diversity in real-world learning process

The Knowledge Tracing (KT) task focuses on predicting a learner's future performance based on the historical interactions. The knowledge state plays a key role in learning process. However, considering that the knowledge state is influenced by various learning factors in the interaction process, such as the exercises similarities, responses reliability and the learner's learning state. Previous models still face two major limitations. First, due to the exercises differences caused by various complex reasons and the unreliability of responses caused by guessing behavior, it is hard to locate the historical interaction which is most relevant to the current answered exercise. Second, the learning state is also a key factor to influence the knowledge state, which is always ignored by previous methods. To address these issues, we propose a new method named Learning State Enhanced Knowledge Tracing (LSKT). Firstly, to simulate the potential differences in interactions, inspired by Item Response Theory~(IRT) paradigm, we designed three different embedding methods ranging from coarse-grained to fine-grained views and conduct comparative analysis on them. Secondly, we design a learning state extraction module to capture the changing learning state during the learning process of the learner. In turn, with the help of the extracted learning state, a more detailed knowledge state could be captured. Experimental results on four real-world datasets show that our LSKT method outperforms the current state-of-the-art methods.


Deep learning and whole-brain networks for biomarker discovery: modeling the dynamics of brain fluctuations in resting-state and cognitive tasks

Background: Brain network models offer insights into brain dynamics, but the utility of model-derived bifurcation parameters as biomarkers remains underexplored. Objective: This study evaluates bifurcation parameters from a whole-brain network model as biomarkers for distinguishing brain states associated with resting-state and task-based cognitive conditions. Methods: Synthetic BOLD signals were generated using a supercritical Hopf brain network model to train deep learning models for bifurcation parameter prediction. Inference was performed on Human Connectome Project data, including both resting-state and task-based conditions. Statistical analyses assessed the separability of brain states based on bifurcation parameter distributions. Results: Bifurcation parameter distributions differed significantly across task and resting-state conditions ($p < 0.0001$ for all but one comparison). Task-based brain states exhibited higher bifurcation values compared to rest. Conclusion: Bifurcation parameters effectively differentiate cognitive and resting states, warranting further investigation as biomarkers for brain state characterization and neurological disorder assessment.


Towards High-Level Modelling in Automated Planning

Planning is a fundamental activity, arising frequently in many contexts, from daily tasks to industrial processes. The planning task consists of selecting a sequence of actions to achieve a specified goal from specified initial conditions. The Planning Domain Definition Language (PDDL) is the leading language used in the field of automated planning to model planning problems. Previous work has highlighted the limitations of PDDL, particularly in terms of its expressivity. Our interest lies in facilitating the handling of complex problems and enhancing the overall capability of automated planning systems. Unified-Planning is a Python library offering high-level API to specify planning problems and to invoke automated planners. In this paper, we present an extension of the UP library aimed at enhancing its expressivity for high-level problem modelling. In particular, we have added an array type, an expression to count booleans, and the allowance for integer parameters in actions. We show how these facilities enable natural high-level models of three classical planning problems.

This short paper gives an overview of the XCSP3 solver implemented in Picat. Picat provides several constraint modules, and the Picat XCSP3 solver uses the sat module. The XCSP3 solver mainly consists of a parser implemented in Picat, which converts constraints from XCSP3 format to Picat. The solver demonstrates the strengths of Picat, a logic-based language, in parsing, modeling, and encoding constraints into SAT. The high performance of the solver in recent XCSP competitions demonstrates the viability of using a SAT solver to solve general constraint satisfaction and optimization problems.


Comparative Study of Probabilistic Atlas and Deep Learning Approaches for Automatic Brain Tissue Segmentation from MRI Using N4 Bias Field Correction and Anisotropic Diffusion Pre-processing Techniques

Automatic brain tissue segmentation from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) images is vital for accurate diagnosis and further analysis in medical imaging. Despite advancements in segmentation techniques, a comprehensive comparison between traditional statistical methods and modern deep learning approaches using pre-processing techniques like N4 Bias Field Correction and Anisotropic Diffusion remains underexplored. This study provides a comparative analysis of various segmentation models, including Probabilistic ATLAS, U-Net, nnU-Net, and LinkNet, enhanced with these pre-processing techniques to segment brain tissues (white matter (WM), grey matter (GM) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)) on the Internet Brain Segmentation Repository (IBSR18) dataset. Our results demonstrate that the 3D nnU-Net model outperforms others, achieving the highest mean Dice Coefficient score (0.937 +- 0.012), while the 2D nnU-Net model recorded the lowest mean Hausdorff Distance (5.005 +- 0.343 mm) and the lowest mean Absolute Volumetric Difference (3.695 +- 2.931 mm) across five unseen test samples. The findings highlight the superiority of nnU-Net models in brain tissue segmentation, particularly when combined with N4 Bias Field Correction and Anisotropic Diffusion pre-processing techniques.
